Just installed an NVIDIA Quadro FX 500/FX 600. GRUB and the startup screen with the orange bar run fine. When the login manager is supposed to load, the signal to the monitor is cut off. Nothing comes out of either the new one or the old, integrated card.
I tried running Ubuntu recovery console... nothing. I can't get back into Ubuntu.
EDIT: It runs fine with the live CD. When I tried to enable desktop effects, it made me download this driver:

I manually installed two of three driver versions with Envy. The drivers are installed and it says it rewrote xorg.conf but when I check it, it's still showing VIA Unichrome. Sure enough, after a restart and installation of the card, nothing happens. |

| olegnep | Apr 14, 12:55pm | you could do what i did , start a live cd and resize your partition (make it smaller) create a new ext3 partition , copy all the files in your home folder (even hidden ones) and paste them into your new partition. then you can do a reinstall , just manually partition when installing. then make sure to mark your home partition is marked as the home partition and your other partition as the root partition (and to format the root but not the home) then just sit back and wait.
i just did it last week , it all could have been avoided if someone had told me of the significance of a separate home partition...
ps: make your root partition about 10 - 20 gigs and leave the rest for home. |

You can usually find out what went wrong by having a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but from your post in 1, it sounds like it's started but the display is blank, which maybe due to e.g. the monitor being given the wrong resolution, or the wrong card (the internal one) being selected.
The trouble with reinstalling is that you may just run into exactly the same problem, all else being equal. |
